Water is the ultimate contradiction. What appears on the surface can be the total opposite underneath. 

Water doesn't hold still for a camera. It moves while you're trying to capture it, which means you never really get the same image twice, even if you shoot the same person in the same pool on the same afternoon. Something always shifts. The light. The ripple. The exact second someone stops posing and just exists in front of the lens.

That's the moment I'm actually after. Not the pose. The second right after it falls apart.

I used to think I was drawn to water because its beauty, and it is beautiful, but that's not really it. I think I'm drawn to how little control I have over it. Everything else in a shoot, I can direct. The water does what it wants.

It doesn't wait for me to be ready. It moves whether I've got the shot or not, and I've had to learn to work at its pace instead of mine. That's rare in this job. Most things bend to what I need. Water never does.

Maybe that's the whole appeal. Not the beauty. The refusal. The ultimate contradiction was never really about water. It's what happens the moment something stops trying to be understood and just is.
